Mycological Society

Mission :The purpose of this organization shall be to unite like-minded individuals interested in mycology and mushroom cultivation, to promote education and research in the field of mycology, to provide opportunities for members to participate in mushroom cultivation projects and foraging trips, and to explore the intersectionalities of mycology, social, financial, and environmental justices.

Values: The UC Mycological Society is rooted in a three-pillar approach: environmental restoration, social justice, and financial sustainability, using fungi as a transformative agent for change.

Environmentally, we champion mycoremediation as a powerful tool to address pollution and ecological degradation, especially in communities burdened by environmental injustice. By supporting research and hands-on practice, we aim to clean contaminated soil and water, restore biodiversity, and contribute directly to global sustainability goals set by the United Nations.

Socially, we recognize the strong link between environmental health and community well-being. Through education and empowerment, we provide the UCCS and greater Colorado Springs communities with the skills to use fungi for food production, waste reduction, and clean water access—especially in under-resourced or marginalized areas. Our goal is to build a welcoming, inclusive space where students and community members can collaboratively address food insecurity, promote public health, and lead grassroots environmental activism.

Financially, we believe fungi can support a just and regenerative economy. The UCMS fosters low-cost, high-yield mushroom cultivation using recycled and waste materials, demonstrating accessible pathways to economic self-sufficiency. We envision a model where the UCCS community can grow food and medicinal mushrooms at no personal cost, while excess yields can support charitable and market-based initiatives. By integrating mycology into local bioeconomy efforts, we aim to create a scalable, equitable system that sustains people and the planet.
